At least 10 dead as police clashes with protesters in Maputo: Deadly Protests Erupt After Disputed Mozambique Elections

 

Currently, Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, is experiencing significant unrest following the disputed October 9th elections. Protests erupted after the ruling party FRELIMO was declared the winner, which would extend its almost 50-year hold on power. Opposition groups and election observers have alleged widespread electoral fraud, leading to widespread demonstrations.

These protests have turned violent, with police reportedly using tear gas and live ammunition to disperse crowds. As of early November, at least 10 people have been confirmed dead, with dozens more injured in clashes between protesters and security forces. The unrest has caused widespread disruptions in Maputo, and there are concerns that the situation could escalate further if not addressed by the government.

Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi has called for an end to the protests, urging citizens to avoid actions that could "destroy the country." Despite these appeals, the opposition, particularly supporters of independent candidate Venancio Mondlane, continue to call for demonstrations, accusing the government of rigging the election. The opposition has also filed an appeal against the election results, demanding transparency and accountability.
