In a resolute move to combat torture and uphold human rights, the Federal Government of Nigeria has called on justice sector stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to rally against torture in compliance with international standards.
The Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, represented by Dr. Omozojie Okoboh, addressed this critical issue during a sensitisation and advocacy session in Abuja. The event emphasized Nigeria’s obligations under the United Nations Convention Against Torture (UNCAT) and its Optional Protocol, as well as other international human rights treaties.
Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Mrs. Jedy-Agba urged stakeholders to collaborate and speak out against acts of torture, particularly in detention facilities such as police stations, prisons, and psychiatric hospitals. She reassured participants that the government is actively reviewing the Anti-Torture Act to broaden the definition of torture and bolster mechanisms to eradicate such practices.
“This session underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to combating torture and cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment,” she noted. “Strategic interaction between stakeholders is crucial to addressing the challenges associated with implementing anti-torture measures in line with Nigeria’s international obligations.”
The sensitisation program follows a visit by the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (UNSPT) in September 2024, during which Nigeria’s detention facilities were assessed. While awaiting the formal UNSPT report, the Ministry of Justice has initiated proactive measures to raise awareness and strengthen anti-torture policies.
Participants were also reminded of the government’s duty to provide restitution and rehabilitation for victims of torture. Mrs. Jedy-Agba encouraged attendees to become champions of the anti-torture cause and implement these measures within their institutions.
As a signatory to international conventions such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Nigeria’s advocacy against torture is a critical step in fostering a culture of respect for human rights.
